The multifunctional smart battery storage brAIn by FUERGY is currently located in the Banská Bystrica industrial area. It provides certified ancillary services for the transmission system operator and at the same time non-certified ancillary services in the form of flexibility for the electricity supplier. It enables the provision of 2 megawatts of certified ancillary services (FCR) for the transmission system operator combined with non-certified ancillary services in the form of energy flexibility for the electricity supplier. The battery storage has a capacity of 2.916 megawatt-hours. To ensure maximum performance and safety, non-flammable LiFePO4 batteries were used. The power of the inverters is 2.7 megawatts. The brAIn battery storage does not behave as a single unit. It is composed of multiple independent parts that can be combined in order to minimize downtime and facilitate technical inspection. The existing cooling system for cable collectors was efficiently used to cool the batteries as well. To manage the battery storage, FUERGY uses its own interface for provision of balancing services and energy management system (EMS). The battery storage brAIn represents a modern, emission-free solution that supports the transition to renewables and ensures reliable operation of the entire power grid.

Economic benefits

Thanks to the multi-functional use of storage, the full capacity of the batteries can be recovered in 24/7 mode. The efficient and battery-friendly management of brAIn battery storage has an impact on the overall faster payback time of the investment. The investment in the storage facility in Banská Bystrica is conservatively estimated to be recovered in approximately 3.5 years. The repository is thus commercially viable even without public funding.

Environmental benefits

brAIn storage replaces traditional support service providers burning primary fossil fuels. brAIn battery storage can provide the same service completely emission-free and can pay off its carbon debt from its Life Cycle Analysis or LCA in its first year of operation. Meanwhile, the lifetime of the storage can be as long as 15 years. The installation of brAIn storage is much quicker, easier and independent of water resources, unlike hydropower plants affecting local habitats. It also promotes faster deployment of renewable energy sources.

Examples of implementation of the solution in practice

To use the storage, with sufficient power to provide both types of support services, a sufficiently large power consumption is also required. For a 2.7 megawatt storage facility, this is a minimum of 35 gigawatt-hours per year and a consumption of at least 2.7 megawatts per hour. Ideally, even with 24/7 electricity consumption. However, the load diagram of the installation site is also important and must provide sufficient potential for load control. Suitable installation sites are, for example, existing or former industrial sites, or energy intensive companies that, due to the development of the economy, have curtailed their production but have sufficient energy infrastructure left.
