Description
The main idea of this concept is to implement measures in urban residential area that will create conditions for better survival during extreme heatwaves, strong winds, heavy rainfall, and other negative consequences of climate change. We aim to make urban residential area a pleasant place to live, not just for people, but also for flora and fauna. We have managed to implement a comprehensive range of mitigation and adaptation measures in Karlova Ves. Measures have been carried out on buildings (energy-saving and green measures), as well as in public space (rainwater management, permeable surfaces, support for biodiversity, shading). A number of inspiring documents have been created, such as the Catalogue of Adaptation-Mitigation Measures, the Climate Action Plan for Karlova Ves, as well as the unique online tool KLIMASKEN – used by cities to calculate their carbon footprint. All of these materials are freely available on the project website: https://odolnesidliska.sk/na-stiahnutie/. Thanks to the established Community Education Centre for Climate and Biodiversity, we can spread awareness about mitigation and adaptation measures to be taken by municipalities and public.
Economic benefits
Reduction of heating, electricity and drinking water costs.
Environmental benefits
Reduction of CO2 production, promotion of biodiversity, capture of rainwater in the area.
Examples of implementation of the solution in practice
In-depth renovation of the Kolískova 14 Kindergarten and A.Dubček Primary School - innovative green measures to reduce the energy consumption of the buildings: in addition to insulation, the building overheating is prevented by external window shading and green walls, heat recovery from waste air is solved by controlled ventilation, photovoltaic and solar panels are installed, rainwater is used for sanitary purposes. - A complex of water retention measures in the public space in the Cascades Park - water retention from the roofs of the buildings in a system of soaking wetlands, including an artificial water flow with rainwater. - Extensive vegetation roof on the extension of the Bratislava-Karlova Ves Municipal Office. - Revitalisation of the Pribišova pedestrian zone in Dlhých díle - planting of greenery to support biodiversity, raised beds on paved areas, green walls and roofing of the original metal structure with climbing plants. - Screening of public spaces and children's sandpits with outdoor tarpaulins (50 pieces) - Establishment of a Community Learning Centre for Climate and Biodiversity. - Development of KLIMASKEN - an online tool for monitoring and evaluating information on adaptation and mitigation activities in cities, municipalities or on buildings. https://www.klimasken.sk/sk/.
