Description
Knauf Insulation's production plant in Nová Baňa was one of the pilot plants in the entire Knauf Insulation Group to build this type of desulphurisation technology and the project is a prime example of the implementation of the circular economy. The devices on both lines capture sulphur emissions from the waste gases by using a sorbent to which the sulphur is bound. The cleaned waste gases are extracted into a shared 130-metre exhaust stack and the sorbent used is a suitable raw material for the construction and cement industries. For the used sorbent from the DESOX devices, Knauf Insulation received a certificate in 2022 for the possible further use of this by-product of the desulphurisation process. For this by-product called KISORB, they have found applications in the construction, cement and agricultural sectors.
Economic benefits
Thanks to the sorbent used (which has the purpose of binding the sulphur from the flue gases), the desulphurisation process generates CaSO4 (calcium sulphate) - a white crystalline substance (known as gypsum in its hydrated form) which is useful in the construction and cement industries and even in agriculture.
Environmental benefits
Reduction of sulphur components in waste gases from manufacturing.
Examples of implementation of the solution in practice
The technology for desulphurisation of waste gases from cupola furnaces has been successfully applied at the Knauf Insulation plant in Nová Baňa.
