Description

After the completion of the geological survey and the administrative preparation of the assignment, in March 2021, the company PW Energy has introduced the project for the utilization of geothermal energy for power production within two geothermal centers in the Žiar nad Hronom region, and has recently introduced a second project of such a kind in the region of Prešov. Geothermal energy from wells is used for the production of electricity and heat. Green energy is generated for households and industries, producing no burden for the environment. Electricity generation will take place in facilities based on the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle), each of which will have an installed electrical capacity of 6.3 to 6.5 MWe (a total of 12.6 to 13 MWe). Each power plant will utilize the energy using six wells (three production and three re-injection) in a closed loop with re-injection of the thermally exploited geothermal water, thanks to which the water will be reused in the production loop. Electricity generation will be possible thanks to the use of hot underground water from depths around 3,000 m to 4,000 m.

Economic benefits

A stable, environmentally friendly, independent and sustainable source of electricity and heat. Around geothermal objects, many projects are being implemented around the world in the fields of agriculture, industry, food production, recreation and many other sectors. Such projects help the economic growth of the area and regions.

Environmental benefits

A clean, environmentally friendly source of electrical and thermal energy. Using closed-cycle water reinjection and ORC technology, it produces no emissions during operation. By reinjecting used geothermal water, which is reheated underground and can be reused in the production process, this resource is sustainable in the long term and virtually inexhaustible.

Examples of implementation of the solution in practice

The first geothermal power plants in Žiar nad Hronom and Prešov are under preparation. No projects of this nature have yet been implemented in Slovakia, but these are pilot projects that will help kick-start further development of similar projects.
