Description
Tesco Stores SR, a. s. is the biggest retail chain in Slovakia. Currently, it runs 152 stores of different formats, 18 petrol stations and three distribution centres. Their ambition is to ensure that by 2025 no food that is suitable for consumption is thrown away. In 2019 contributed to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 - to decrease the amount of food waste in the world by half. The total volume of food waste in that year decreased by 40%, that is, from 4770 tonnes to 2852 tonnes. They help people in need by providing food. They donated 5280 tonnes of foods to partner organisations.
Economic benefits
Up to a third of the world's food production ends up as waste, a figure that represents a huge level of inefficiency. According to the UN's Champions 12.3 coalition, food loss and waste cause an economic loss of around $940 billion annually. New research has found that companies can save up to $14 for every $1 invested in reducing food waste.
Environmental benefits
Tesco does not consider it right to waste food. Up to a third of the world's food production ends up as waste. Food waste is not only a social and societal problem, the environment suffers too. Along with food, the energy and water needed to produce, transport and package it are also wasted.
If food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world. Up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food loss and waste. As a company that takes its role in tackling the climate crisis seriously, reducing food waste is the best place for Tesco to start as a food retailer.
