Description

Red and white containers are the first smart collection containers in Slovakia for the collection of small electrical waste and used batteries, which are commonly found in households. The main idea of the project is to create a comfortable way of handing over unnecessary electrical waste and used batteries in the immediate vicinity of homes, thanks to which their share in municipal waste is minimized. Collection containers are most often placed on container stands next to other containers of separate collection. An important aspect of the project is also the communication and raising of awareness that electrical waste does not belong in municipal waste and landfill. Red-and-white containers are offered to local governments free of charge, which means that they do not pay for their operation, so this service is also free for citizens. The red-and-white containers are equipped with sensors that monitor their contents, thanks to which it is possible to effectively plan their emptying. The public can also monitor the level of filling of collection containers via a mobile application. With the use of the application, it is also possible to search for collection containers with the information on level of their filling, as well as to report any damage to containers.

Economic benefits

The economic benefits of the project can be seen at two levels. The first is aimed at municipalities, which, thanks to the financing of the project by ASEKOL SK, do not bear any costs associated with the collection of small e-waste. By increasing the separated component of municipal waste, municipal waste charges may also decrease. The second level focuses on savings from the extraction of primary raw materials.

Environmental benefits

Reducing the amount of e-waste disposed of in landfills and the subsequent recycling of e-waste contribute to saving primary raw materials and protecting the environment.

Examples of implementation of the solution in practice

The Red-White Containers project has been active since 2017. Since then, more than 270 stationary collection containers have been deployed in more than 80 municipalities, covering more than 15% of the population of Slovakia. The most successful municipality that has joined the project is the city of Banská Bystrica. As of 2018, the residents of the city have grown so fond of the project that the city is the most successful municipality in collecting e-waste every year, now with 25 stationary collection bins. The capital city of Bratislava has also joined in the collection of e-waste, where red and white containers have been deployed in two city districts and more will be added.
