Description

Ekolumi, s. r. o.is an active recycler of PET bottles in Europe. In 2018 the company was joined via shares by one of the biggest PET bottle recyclers in Europe, GREENTECH SA based in Romania. Ekolumi, s.r.o. thus became a multinational Green Group member, which yearly processes 140 000 tonnes of PET bottles under its plastics division.

In 2019, together with the Romanian Green Group, they built a PET bottle recycling facility in Banská Bystrica. The value of the investment is €13 mil., along with the revitalisation of an old industrial brownfield of the former cement factory and an erection of a new hall. The production line's entire capacity is an input of 40000 tonnes of PET bottles a year, with an output of 30000 tonnes of PET flakes. The final product, the PET flake, serves to produce fibres, binding bands, and food industry-certified regranulate from which new PET bottles are made.

They are preparing for 2025 when the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive will come into effect; by then, plastic bottles should contain at least 25% recycled plastic (crushed, washed, and heated), or the so-called rPET regranulate, in their manufacture. Ekolumi, s.r.o plans to continually invest in meeting EU goals and developing the capacity for retransforming PET bottles into rPET regranulate and PET binding bands.

Economic benefits

- Greentech Slovakia, s. r. o., is a Slovak company with all 90 employees from the Banská Bystrica region, with a plan to fill a total of around 200 positions by 2022.

Environmental benefits

Green Group is the first recycling group in Europe to be awarded the "green certificate" for CO2 reduction for PET recycling, the so-called Gold Standard platform - Switzerland. It supports any positive steps to increase the amount of waste sorted, including the introduction of a PET bottle deposit system.

The company's goal is to contribute to a faster move towards a circular economy in Slovakia by processing all PET bottles sorted in Slovakia and transforming them into feedstock. Due to Slovakia's advantageous location and the highly developed centre suitable for recycling, it is on track to meet this goal.
