Description
The city of Prešov is an important economic and administrative centre of eastern Slovakia with a population of 90 349 (data from the Slovak Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, valid as of 31 December 2014), it is the third largest city in Slovakia. It is the seat of several regional authorities and the administrative centre of the Prešov Self-Governing Region, which is the largest in Slovakia. The historic core of the city is a national cultural monument. The town lies in the Košice Basin and is surrounded by the Slánske Hills and the Šarišská Highlands. The Torysa and Sekčov rivers flow through Prešov. Prešov is a signatory to the Covenant of Mayors on Climate and Energy, and its mayor, Andrea Turčanová, is an ambassador for the Covenant in the European Committee of the Regions. That is why Prešov supports technologies or services that will contribute to the reduction of harmful emissions - whether by modernising public transport (preference for public transport vehicles at intersections, electrification of lines, purchase of new vehicles, where in addition to trolleybuses, electric buses are also envisaged), support for cycling (currently in Prešov, 6 different sections of cycle paths are being built, with a total length of about 14 km), but also by participating in the project of introducing shared bicycles.
